How To Hire A Car: From Start To Finish

If you’re looking to hire a car but have never been through the process before, you probably have a lot of questions. To help make the process a smooth and stress-free one, we’ve put together this guide, which looks at how to hire a car from start to finish.

1. Think About What You Want And Need

Before you hire a car, you will first need to decide what kind of vehicle you would like to borrow, which will largely depend on what you are needing it for. Remember that hiring a car is a big responsibility, as you’re essentially in charge of another person’s property, so think about what you’re comfortable driving, especially if you’re going to be hiring the car in an area that’s new to you. Some considerations to bear in mind include:

  • How long do you need the car for?
  • How many passengers does it need to seat?
  • Do you need plenty of storage space?
  • How much are you willing to pay?

Once you know what you’re looking for, you can move onto the booking stage.

2. Put In A Booking Request

To hire a car with Territory Car Hire, you must first put in a request via our Hire a Car page. Here, you can also view our entire fleet. This will then take you to our Reservations page, where you will find our hiring application form. This process is completely digital, saving you a lot of time and effort and allowing you to plan your entire trip in advance!

You will need to input your pick-up and drop-off date and time, alongside the driver’s age. Depending on the information given, you can then choose your preferred car from the drop-down menu and click next, which will take you to the ‘Extras’ tab, which will include options for children’s booster seats and insurance.

Remember that the more add-on features you choose, the more expensive the car will be to hire, but it’s incredibly important not to be stringent with these. Small children must be seated in booster seats for their safety, and having additional insurance will protect you from high monetary charges if you end up in an accident. For just one upfront payment of $200, you’ll be covered for a range of eventualities.

Once you’ve done this, the next step is to pay. You’ll then receive confirmation of your booking.

3. Pick Up Your Vehicle

Simply turn up at your chosen branch at the time and date you gave on the online form. Make sure you have proof of your order with you so you can show the staff member who is serving you. They’ll then run through some guidelines with you before handing over the keys. Make sure to return the car no later than the date and time you stated on your application form.

What Else Do You Need To Know?

Before making any booking, it’s important to note that you need to be at least 21 to rent a car with us. You must have held your driver’s licence for a minimum of 12 months as well. Note: if you are under 25, there may be a young driver surcharge.

What’s more, when you pick up the car, it will be full of fuel, so you are expected to return the vehicle with a full tank. If you fail to do so, you could face additional charges, which are usually much higher than what you’d pay to fill up the car in the first place.
